In all the house doom I totally forgot to add that this weekend we managed to install laminate flooring in our living room and hallway! It looks awesome!!! So, one step closer to having a remodeled house. Which meansone step closer to selling it. And one step closer to being able to afford to build our house.

My entire upstairs now has laminate flooring. I would have loved real hardwood, but 1. Spent most of my youth in thrall to my mother's hardwood floors (does anybody else remember waxing?) and that sucked, and 2. My kids kept wanting food, clothes, and expensive trivia like that.

It's pretty great stuff. Low maintenance aside, I was utterly grossed out by the crap that was in and under the carpet when they pulled it up. Now I can not only sweep and get the crap up and out of here, but the felt pads on the bottom of my very heavy furniture means I can scoot it around by myself! Even the piano! Gotta love that.

Also all our allergies are significantly better now. Hope it works out as well for you guys while you wait to build the house.

*nods* I can't understand how people can stand to have carpets, especially with pets, as they never are really clean. I'm only mildly allergic to a few things (dust mites, oak mold, and cats) and moving out of the dorms and having my own place where I could rip out all the carpet made my health many times better.

There's also pre-made wood flooring. We put bamboo flooring that came pre-finished and cut up in our loft in place of the carpet and it was as cheap as carpet and it's fabulously durable and never needs waxing or anything similar. Plus, you get to feel all warm and fuzzy inside for using renewable building supplies.

I would love to have bamboo flooring - it is what we eventually plan to do in part of our new house. We couldn't afford it in this house - we went with the cheapest possible thing to make the place look nice and re-saleable which was laminate flooring from costco with an additional coupon. It ended up at something like $20 per package wich was amaizingly cheap. And looks SO much nicer than the stained carpet, plus resolving many of the dust issues. With two cats and a large dog being able to get at the dust is soooooo nice!
