Instead of playing with my friends at an SCA event this weekend, a bunch of us worked on the glass shop and put in a cement floor! See [profile] medievalglass for details. We still got a lot of socializing in, dispite being totally exhausted. Cat and Jamie stayed with us for the weekend, and we spent time playing on our new Wii. I also totally kicked butt at Scrable. Today was a vicodin day for the knee - it was really sore after all the work on the floor. I went to Fabric Depot with my mum, started two batches of mead, and burnt my hand.

The burn was really stupid, and I am not yet sure how bad it is. I had set the top to one of my plastic primary fermentors on the stove since our counters were covered. I hadn't realised that [profile] hanksan had left one of the burners on a little. When I picked the lid back up, I didn't see that one area along the edge had started to melt, and only noticed when I was pushing the lid down with the palm of my hand. Hence, a nice long burn across the palm of my hand. :-P I really hope it doesn't puff up, it would be really embarasing to go into the doctor's office tomorrow for an appointment about my knee with a bandaged up hand.
But back to the good stuff - the meads should rock! Sadly I know have to be paitient and wait. I am doing one batch of semi-sweet ginger mead. I also added a little saffron, mostly for color. I was tempted to add lemon or chamomile, but didn't have good enough ingrediants laying around the house. The other mead will be a dry melomel. I have still not decided on what fruit I want to use - they have some really flavorfull strawberries in 3 lb clamshells at costco right now, so if they are still around when it is time to rack onto the fruit in several weeks I may use them. Or I may do a blend with some frozen berries, depending on what mom can find in her big freezer. I have high hopes for both meads, and even more recipies I want to try. Mmmmm mead. I will probabaly try some more methoglins if I start any more before fruit seasons begin. I also want to try some lavander mead this summer... so many recipes, so little time and space in the garage!

Yay mead! I'll be making a dry mead of some sort this season too (possible ginger + orange? we'll see). I might not start it until the moving doom is over though.

One of the recipes in the mead book we have is for a peach ginger mead, and that sounds pretty nice too. My favorite mead from the store is a peach mead, Mmmm. orange would be good too. I am also tempted to try a prickly pear mead if I can get cactie.

Good luck on the moving doom!

I also totally kicked butt at Scrable.

Scrable? ;)

I know, I know...it's an affliction. I can't not edit, no matter how hard I try!

Hehe. Ironically my spelling sucks, but not as much as my one-handed typing. ;-) Good pattern recognition can make up for a lot though! As does spell check if I wasn't to full of burnt hand angst to not bother with it.
